From your title, you already know what you should have done. You are not alone. I get myself in messes sometimes, too.

IMO: Terrible situation! At the flop, pushing is bad, just calling is very bad, and folding is worse. At that point I would probably push him all-in and hope for 2 miracle cards. I wish I had something more positive to say, sir. Sometimes that is how it is in poker.
