Hand Replayer -- What's Up?
by qingdaoman » Tue Feb 28, 2006 12:53 pm
Okay, I downloaded the hand replayer, put in the hands from my hard drive, and...nothing happened.
I closed it, and opened it again. Nothing happened.
I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it. Nothing happened.
I checked the readme file, to see if I'd missed something. Nope, nothing there.
Finally, I found links to a forum, and an out-of-date (by at least half a year) discussion of the issue that the hand replayer doesn't work with hand histories from the hard drive...that you have to request the hand histories by email. That forum was, in fact, the "old" forum. I had to follow ANOTHER link to find this forum.
Now, I understand that this is a free product, and I'm not complaining because this product doesn't do everything I want. There are lots of products out there that I can pay money for if I want to be sure of quality. But one question -- one which seems GLARINGLY obvious to me.
WHY THE HELL NOT simply put a notice on the download page that TELLS PEOPLE that it only works with hand histories emailed by PartyPoker.com? A quick notice such as "**CAUTION -- This program is only compatible with hand histories emailed by PartyPoker.com. It does not work with the hand histories stored on your computer**"
I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work, when in fact it wasn't my fault. And it took me more time to find my way to a place that finally told me WHY it didn't work. I can only assume that there are tons of other people who've wasted their time to equally poor effect, who have not had the patience/perseverence to find their way here.
A free product that doesn't do everything I want -- I've got no beef with that.
But wasting my time on a problem that could have been SO easily avoided with a two-minute change to the HTML, THAT bugs me.
And speaking of the download page...might it ALSO not be an idea to update the information saying that version 2.0 will be available in December of 2005, since that very obviously is not the case? I downloaded this software assuming that it WAS the newest version, as stated on the site. And while you're at it, why not make the forum link to the NEW forum, rather than to the old one?
I'm a newcomer here, and I'm sure that I'll take my share of abuse from the established regulars. But considering how VERY little time it would take to make the changes I suggested above -- and how very MUCH time it could save others coming to the site and downloading the software -- I think that my comments are reasonable, and my complaints legitimate.

Not really, we're actually pretty welcoming. Your first post contained complete sentences and coherent thought unlike many other new posts. You're off to a good start.

Agreed, slightly confrontational, but I like this as a first post rather than the retarded freeroll whores that try to suck up to everyone.

Yeah...actually, not so "confrontational" as "frustrated"...that post was written in expression of my frustration at over an hour of trying to figure out what was wrong, and how to fix it. In retrospect -- after sleeping on it -- I'd likely tone it down a little (such as removing the "why the hell not..." statement). But the general gist stands as is. And I am most definitely not a person to "suck up" to anyone!

LOL -- I run my own discussion board, so am all too familiar with the roving packs of semi-illiterate morons who seem to think that profanity, insults about your mother, and unsupported claims of superiority constitute intelligent or witty dialogue. I try to avoid that myself.
Okay...since I've kinda' "made my entrance" already, so to speak, a bit of an introduction. I'm Canadian, but have been living/working in China for the past 12 years, and own my own consulting company in Beijing.
I have also started a non-profit organization to work with one of China's least-known and most remote minority groups, the Mosuo. TOO much to say about them, but they are an extremely unique culture. They live high in the Himalayan mountains (close to Tibet), are a matriarchal culture, and -- get this -- they do not get married. Instead, women simply choose and change partners as they please (kinda' the reverse side of the idealized male dream). Anyway, if people are interested to know more about this (the Mosuo, or the work we're doing to help them), you can check out my site at www.mosuoproject.org. It is still somewhat under construction, but the forum section has lots of information.
As to poker...I'm a relative newcomer. I have taken it up because I want to work on doing some serious writing for awhile (a novel, and a non-fiction book about doing business in China), and need something that provides a reliable income with flexible hours. And thus, poker. Fortunately, I have a coach here who is actually one of PartyPoker's more accomplished players, and am hoping to avoid many of the typical beginner mistakes...but I am myself still a beginner, and want to avoid posturing or pretending to be more than I am.

Do they like white guys? If so, where do I sign up?

LOL -- No real issues in regards to your race...
...however, you DO need to be able to speak Chinese, since almost nobody there speaks English. And its bloody hard to get to, high in the Himalayas (at roughly 3500 m), close to Tibet. You might wanna' consider other options

And now -- having introduced myself with a bunch of complaints, it is only fair that I in turn commend JP that he did, in fact, make the changes I suggested.
Quite a timely response, I must say

That was MJ. He is the admin here and controls all aspects of the web site.
Us mods just have some features that help us try to keep the monkeys here (myself included) somewhat contained.

No, but we do have T&A.... just not the one you're thinking of. Participate on the forums long enough, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
How's that for a dangling carrot?

I think you're the first guy who's ever talked to me about his dangling carrot...
