Expand my library: Scotty needs some Trip-Hop
by scotty1139 » Wed Nov 23, 2005 10:53 pm
I have exactly 1984 songs in my ITunes library, which I'm playing through a random shuffle for roughly 45 hours each week. That's not a whole lot of material for someone who works at home and needs to have new music to keep from getting bored with the usual stuff. Almost complete boredom is what compelled me to spend 4 hours browsing on ITunes today instead of actually working. Man, I REALLY need some new music. Desperately.
That's where you come in. You're probably more into acquiring new music than I have been, I'm woefully delinquent. Here's the problem, I'm sorta picky. I hate buying an album that has only one or two good songs on it. I will admit, however, to having some albums 'grow' on me after giving them a chance. I'll tell you what kinds of music I like, and you can offer some recommendations. Maybe you'll even be nice enough to burn me a disc or two, or twenty (just don't tell the RIAA....shhhh!) If I really like what you've recommended or sent me, you will curry extreme favor with me. That may not win you political office or help you get a date, but I'm sure I can recompensate you in some way.
Here's a basic breakdown of what I have
Rock/Alt. Rock (from Seattle grunge, through Radiohead, to Green Day)
Guitar Dependent: Dave Matthews etc...
Genre-Defying (i.e. Beck)
Foreign Music (mostly Italian, from living abroad)
Soundtracks (from totally instrumental "Amelie" to "Fire Walk with Me")
Female Pop/Indie Vocalists (the result of dating during the Lilith Fair era: from Sarah Mclachlan and Sheryl Crow, through pre-Disneyfied Liz Phair, to Fiona Apple and Dido.
What I'm not interested In:
Teenie Pop, Rap, Country, and Classical
I've recently discovered I kinda like Electronica. It started with Moby, picking up Massive Attack, gradually adjusting to Bjork, and my latest 'discovery' has been Portishead, whose album "Dummy" is playing on repeat nearly every day. That was an honor that was previously bestowed on Radiohead's "Ok Computer." I don't like the self-titled album as much as Dummy, but it's par for the course. Anyhoo, so apparently there's this whole category of electronica that I had been unaware of until um... about two weeks ago, called Trip Hop. For someone without satellite radio, that's no surprise. I realize some Trip Hop is more instrumentally based than others, but that's not so much an issue for me, it doesn't have to be background music.
Thanks in advance!

Probably not what you're looking for, but check out your local library for cds. If there's something I want to hear, I see if our library system has it, check it out, and give it a listen. Then I can decide if I want to buy it or not. Some would suggest I could burn the whole cd from the library, but I would never do that.
Anyway, I know not all library systems are like the one here in Pittsburgh. All the branches in the county share everything...books, books on tape and cd, cds, dvds, everything. Ask for it at the local branch and they get it for you in a couple of days (if nobody has it checked out). I haven't paid to rent a dvd in years. They might not have the non-major releases when it comes to music thou.
Oh, and my new favorite group is Cake.

I am a big fan of some electronic music, so maybe I can help you out...
Personally I think the best electronic album ever made is dubnobasswithmyheadman by Underworld. Really a neat portrait of city life and all that. Other than that, I can recommend Orbital a lot, whose albums Orbital 2, Snivilisation, and In Sides are all excellent. I'd probably start with Orbital 2 and go from there. If you're into ambient stuff, check out The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, which defined the entire ambient-house genre and pretty much influences everything that came after. Otherwise, there's more experimental drill n' bass stuff, like Aphex Twin's Richard D. James Album, which is a classic, and Squarepusher's Hard Normal Daddy or Ultravisitor which is a fusion between complex drum programming and excellent jazz musicianship.
Hope this helps!

some of the dj's include
Acid Pimp
Carl Cox
DJ Dan
DJ Darwin
Jeff Mills
Mistress Barbara
Riche Hawtin
All these dj's are underground techno music. Its the only techno music I really listen to. I dont like that house crap. If you're interested in any of this just gimmie a pm.

techno is totally what you need. listen to http://www.di.fm
happy hardcore music is my favorite. people from South Dakota are too conservative to listen to techno except me. They're into country, rock, oldies. too bad, they're missing out.

Here's some stuff I've been listening to recently:
Northstar (sort of underground but a sick band)
Third Eye Blind
Fall out Boy
The Used
The Eagles
Ray Charles
Kayne West's new CD ( I know you said you don't like rap but it's "white people rap")
Coldplay

If you've ever heard and liked Taproot before, then I think Blue-Sky Research is possibly the best CD to come out this year (I know DerKo loves them!).
Other favorites (all in the rock/alt rock category):
Straylight Run - self-titled
Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want To Be, Tell All Your Friends
The Starting Line - Say It Like You Mean It
Zebrahead - MFZB
Crazy Town - Darkhorse
Brand New - Deja Entendu

OffTopic Scotty but I am curious............. What is your favorite band from the Seattle grunge period? or What bands/songs do you have from that period/region?

I agree with Goofy here.
Also, you mentioned Radiohead. If you like Radiohead, try listening to Muse.
