I don't think he had hit a monster of the flop - check/calling raises on both flop and the turn is pretty hardcore. If he had something - he'd reraise you somewhere. On the river you could have several things happening: a possible flush draw hitting, TWO different 8-outer straight draws hitting and even (but very unlikely) 2-pairs or a set hitting. If he was fishing, he most likely got it.
I see several possibilities:
1) He thought you've missed the flop and called all the way with a pair. The last card is obviously very scary and some people like to bluff scary cards, so he decided that he may as well bluff it.
2) He had a good draw and he hit it.
3) Very very very very very unlikely. He slowplayed something all the way to the river.
With no reads suggesting #1, I'd probably fold it.

So, his play was to call trips all the way to the river on an extremely drawy board?
May I inquire: is this why you won "monies" from him later on?

If that's true, he played it about as shitty as possible.
