Just finished bonus hunting on SunPoker.com. I played about 2500 hands of no-limit at the low buy-ins (.15/.25, .25/.50). Here's my review:
Popularity - It's a cryptologic skin, so it's got a lot of players. Sometimes, there's a short wait to get on a table. The players are mainly from Europe.
Competition - I've only played at low-stakes NL tables, and the competition was relatively soft. I ran into a good number of maniacs. Shorthanded competition was also soft. I found that the competition was softest during evenings and weekends, UK time. Friday and Saturday evenings were the best times to play.
Software - I'm not a fan, but it generally works. Sometimes, the game slows down. Can't stand the "dealer's voice", but you can turn it off. The button arrangement changes when someone bets, so be careful not to click "call" by accident -- I'll admit, I did this once and paid dearly!
Security - I have had no problems.
Promotions - They have a monthly bonus that is good, but VERY hard to clear at low limits. I played 2500 actual hands of no-limit at the levels mentioned above, and earned credit for 260 raked hands. Pots that generate rake less than $1 count as 1/4 of a raked hand. If a pot generates 75 cents of rake, it counts the same as a pot that generates 25 cents of rake. Therefore, if you are playing low limits to clear the bonus, you might as well aim for $5 pots, because you'll get there no faster until the pot size reaches $20.
Support - They have 24/7 phone support, which I used a number of times, due to two or three errors on their part regarding the promotion and the raked hands count. The support is very friendly and willing to follow-up on legitimate mistakes, but they were not able to understand the problem.
Details of the problem: When I signed up (1st of the month -- recommended, since bonuses are counted on MONTHLY raked hands), their system did not put me on any promotion, although I signed up using the tightpoker promotion link. They told me their system was having problems. By the next day, they put me on the promotion (although the $40/200 raked hands promotion does not appear on the bonus details screen), but they did NOT count my first day of play towards my raked hands count. As I approached the bonus, I called them and explained this fact. Each time, they told me it was due to a lag of 1-2 days on their server. Eventually, I did not play for 2 days, and found that the bonus was still off. They were very kind about following up with me, but they did not catch onto the fact that the bonus was not properly calculated. Eventually, I just gave up, played the extra hands, made my bonus and left.
Ethics - They were great about following up on problems, but not accurate in their assessment of the problem.
Other notes:
Be sure to order your PIN for withdrawals as soon as you join. It takes a while to receive it in the mail, and that's the only way you can withdraw.
Be aware that it is very difficult to clear the bonus at low buy-ins.
Overall: 5 out of 10. I like the interface of PokerStars and Bodog better, and the games are softer at Party, but Sun has a decent promotion, especially if you play at limits higher than I do. My biggest complaint is their ongoing problem with my bonus.
