10 Saltine Crackers in 60 Seconds?
by snickers99 » Mon Feb 27, 2006 3:20 pm
If you read Daniel Negreanu's blog, you already saw this (I edited it down a bit):
We got to talking, and then Kasey, always the gambler, wanted to make a bizarre prop bet with me, "I'll give you one full minute to eat 10 saltine crackers without drinking any water," he says. Well, I'm not good with eating bets so I declined. He then tells me that he'll give me three minutes to find anyone in the room to do it.
So I headed into the tournament area and saw... John Juanda! If anyone could do it, I was betting on John. I asked John if he thought he could do it and he seemed pretty confident. We headed down to the bar and lined up the crackers for John.
He was chowin' em' down pretty good, when all of a sudden it looked like he was coughing up powder. At about saltine number 6, John just shook his head and threw in the towel. For the rest of the night, I was giving away a $1000 free roll to anybody who thought they could do it. One of the biggest security guard dudes I'd ever seen gave it a try... nope! Nobody could do it.
Is this another "Drink 1 gallon of milk in an hour" thing? Is it really that hard to eat 10 saltine crackers in a minute? Whoever has saltines, give it a try. I'm curious.

In my laboring days I would chug a 1/2 gallon everyday the minute I got home from work (in under 5 minutes)..... never thought about a full gallon but I doubt it was unattainable for me in those days.
I'll have to try the cracker thing....

It's almost impossible to drink the full gallon. Again, friends have tried and failed. I'm pretty sure most people don't have enough lactase (enzyme that breaks down lactose) to drink the full gallon.

ahhh, so its a "get-it-down-but-comes-right-back-up" type of problem?

Correct. This was discussed on the 'old' forum when someone wanted to know if they should back someone at work. Some guy where he worked claimed he could do it and the forum member (forget who it was) wanted to know if he should put up the money betting against the guy. The guy eventually backed down and the bet was never made.

There is a video of a guy downing a gallon floating around on the internet. It is possible, just highly unlikely. I may have already said this, but my friend claims he can do it. He weighs > 250 I believe. He says he chugs half at the very beginning, then the rest at the very end of the time period. I've never tested him on it.

I have tried the saltine challenge. Let it be known that I'm a fat mofo with an ungodly appetite. Legend has it, I grew up with a tapeworm in my system based on my ability to destroy mass quantities of food constantly throughout the day.
My intro has nothing to do with nothing. However, I couldn't complete the original challenge which was 6 crackers in one minute.

In discussion in the other thread from Eruu (on the 'old' forum), it was decided to add that the milk must stay down for a period of time. I forget how long, but someone did bring up the idea that the guy could just chug it all at the end and puke at like 60 minutes, 2 seconds and it would count.

I've heard people say they know people that can do the saltine thing. I think they said you have to practice a lot, so your body can make saliva quicker. i know i've tried it a few times and did better the more times i tried it.
of course the people i heard this from may have been full of shit, i'm not sure it is possible

My personal favorite is 60 processed cheese slices in an hour.
The only guy I know of that tried it didn't make it past like 23 or 24.
I'm sure it could be done, but it would have to be a big, big man to do so. And I'm not sure what that amount of chemically derived cheese would do to a person's system (the guy above didn't keep it down).

...or out, I imagine he suffered an unfortunate case of constipation.
Speaking of competition. In my prime, my cousin and I had an eat-off at Ben and Jerrys. We both went head to head to see who could finish the Vermonster. Twenty scoops of ice cream, a cookie, banana, and a brownie. He beat me, but we both ate a lot of it. I must tell you that towards the end, I would have chosen to smash my head and face through the glass window, rather than eat one more bite of ice cream, if given a choice that is.
Also, this competition debunked my pickle hypothesis. The pickle hypothesis was "if eating a sandwhich and you're feeling full, then eat a pickle with it and it will help you finish the meal". During the contest, I went next door to the supermart to get some pickles. Didn't help. Didn't taste particularly good either.

Entertaining account of one guy's milk challenge attempt.
http://reumann.net/milkchallenge/index.html
Also, from one guy's discussion on the 6 cracker challenge and his progress to 7 and 8.
"Alright, I'll give up the goods on the chunking method now:
Basically, if you eat three, then two, then one, it seems quite a bit easier to accomplish the feat. The idea is that by getting three out of the way in one swoop while you're still somewhat wet, you're slaying half the beast right away. Doing one right after the other is bad because you're pretty much bone dry after only the first cracker, and doing all six right away is bad because that's just too much cracker to break down.
Incidentally, when I did seven, it was with a 4-3 strategy. Still haven't been able to do a 4-4 yet though. And I wonder why my mouth is so scratched up this week..."

I'm gonna try the Saltine cracker thing when I get home tongiht, but about the milk challenge ...
Although I've heard of this before, would it maked a major difference between 1%, 2%, Skim and/or Whole Milk or did someone already point this out and I over looked it?
