Draw is a game that is played by many, but understood by few. There are many different types of draw games, but they all generally require the same basic skill sets. If you are able to find moderate success in one Draw game, there is a legitimate shot that you are going to do well in another draw game. Of course, the dynamics of each game are going to vary, but the same basic concepts hold true.

Draw Poker - Pre Flop/Deal
The terminology for most Draw games is different than you are going to find in Texas Hold’em or Omaha. Since the framework for a Draw game is the ability and option to trade your original cards for new ones, you are going to have a lot of decisions before the board (or the rest of your hand) is dealt.

If you are dealt something that is not strong to start with, the odds are that you are not going to have a solid hand at the end. This is why you should be very selective with what hands you throw away and which hands you continue with. The difference between a good and bad starting hand will often be the difference between whether you win or lose. Look at it this way, would a home builder rather build on flat land or a monstrous mountain? Of course the flat land provides a better framework and will make things much easier down the line. Draw poker is much the same in that a good starting hand will make play infinitely easier as the hand progresses.

The actual strength of a hand is entirely dependant on the game you are playing and how far along the hand is. For example, three hearts would be a great starting hand, giving you a good shot at landing a flush by showdown, but holding three hearts with one re draw left is all but useless. Chasing after a Draw (no pun intended) or a small two pair type hand will often send players home packing, broke. Don’t try to make something out of nothing when you are playing Draw, particularly after a few re draws have taken place. In Hold’em or Omaha you can raise with a weak hand, even re raise with weak hands, and still potentially wind up with a monster by the end. While this is definitely possible when playing Draw games, it is far likely. Since you have limited opportunities to make or break your hand (all of which costing you a fair amount), you are not going to have the opportunity to drop your hand right away. You either chase after a hand or you don’t. Sometimes you should and sometimes you shouldn’t. This is what Draw poker boils down to, knowing when to toss away your hand and when to go after something big.
